Assignment 24: The 5 News Elements

Yesterday we talked about how a news story is made up of one of FIVE ELEMENTS or a combination of them.

Just in case you forgot the FIVE ELEMENTS, here they are:

1.  Proximity:  The story is NEARBY or LOCAL.
2.  Prominence:  The story involves a WELL KNOWN PERSON.
3.  Timeliness:  The story happens RIGHT NOW.
4.  Consequence:  The story AFFECTS MANY PEOPLE.
5.  Human Interest:  The story touches AN EMOTION.

Today you will look at a series of photographs and decide which NEWS ELEMENT is represented by the photo.  This is similar to the warm-up activity you just completed.  The only difference is that if you decide a picture represents HUMAN INTEREST you must also determine which EMOTION the picture elicits.   Below is an example of a photo with HUMAN INTEREST.  The emotion it elicits is DISAPPOINTMENT.

Now check out the series of photos on the MSNBC link below. Go to the photos for November 18th-24th and watch the slide show. There are 19 photographs.  Mr. Keller will provide you with a sheet to list the NEWS ELEMENTS of each.  THIS WILL BE GRADED so do you best work!
